1609

January 7th is the date for the first recorded fire in America, Jamestown, VA. The settlement was destroyed and all provisions were lost. Many die of exposure and hunger.

1613

Dutch ship "Tiger" burns in what is now New York harbor, forcing her crew to become the first settlers in what is now Manhattan.

1615

Crude hand pumps mounted on skids or wheels used in Germany by this time.

1623

On November 1st, fire destroys seven dwellings at Plymouth and nearly ends the settlement.

1631

Boston, MA passes first fire prevention ordinance banning thatched roofs and wooden chimneys.

1638

First no-smoking law in America, MA. Due to numerous fires, residents not allowed to smoke tobacco outdoors.

1648

First fire wardens appointed, New Amsterdam, present day New York, NY. The four are charged with the responsibility of checking residential chimneys and levying fines as necessary.

1653

January 14th, Boston is burned by a disastrous fire that kills three and leaves 1/3rd of the population homeless. The fire leads to the passing of laws requiring all houses having at least one ladder as well as the purchasing of fire equipment.

1654

Boston obtains there first fire "enjin" made in America. It was created by metalworker Joseph Jencks of Lynn, MA. It was a small box contraption that was operated by men on each end.

1657

First night watch created, New Amsterdam. Eight men walk the streets after dark, watching for fires and stopping anyone who looks suspicious. They carry rattles to sound a fire alarm.

1678

November 27th, fire destroys large parts of Boston's North End including Increase Mathers church.

First paid (call) fire engine company organized in Boston, MA. The small wooden box pump is reported to be the first fire "enjin" in America. It was imported from London, England.

1698

February 24th, fire destroys 50 buildings in Charleston, SC.

1699

Fire destroys most of the rebuild from the 1698 fire in Charleston, SC.
